Phases of the Moon was published in the Fall 2017 issue of Tabula Rasa, a student-run literary and arts journal at Columbia University.

I wrote the entire cycle virtually in one sitting from a collection of notes I had amassed on Victorian flower language, the moon cycle and Zodiac, and Wiccan spells. Sitting on a seven-hour train ride back to New York City from Rochester, I worked through my own feelings with the symbolic vocabulary I had collected.

Each phase of the moon contains narration and a spell, except full moon which describes the moment when my actions and wishes briefly coincided. The distinction between narrative and spell, action and desire, was helpful for sorting out my own feelings.

The cycle ends with a hopeful spell for keeping one's heart open to connection.
